David Zugman

David Zugman: Graduated with honors from U.S. Berkeley, (B.A. History, 1993) and U.C. Hastings Law School (J.D. 1997). In 1997, he joined Federal Defenders of San Diego as a trial attorney and tried more than two dozen cases to verdict. Appeals of the losses followed resulting in two published appellate victories, including;

United States v. Ramirez-Cortez, 213 F.3d 1149 (9th Cir. 2000) (“Talk about chutzpah”)

United States v. Houston, 217 F.3d 1204 (9th Cir. 2000)

In 2000, David joined up with Gary Burcham to form a law partnership. Since then, David has handled thousands of criminal defense cases mostly in the Southern District of California. He has tried more than fifty cases to verdict in both criminal and civil cases. Many of the cases were high profile such as:

United States v. Moalin, 973 F.3d 977 (9th Cir. 2020) (al-Shabaab terrorism with Edward Snowden’s revelations)

United States v. Sanchez, 659 F.3d 1252 (9th Cir. 2011) (reversing 10-year minimum mandatory for misconduct in government’s closing argument)

Garcia-Aguilar v. United States Dist. Court, 535 F.3d 1021 (9th Cir. 2008) (rare mandamus grant benefitting a half dozen illegal entry defendants from sentences in exceeding 2 years)

United States v. Kayser, 488 F.3d 1070 (9th Cir. 2007) (tax evasion conviction reversed)
